SANDY SKOGLUND

ANDY SKOGLUND  was born on September 11, 1946 in Quincy, Massachusetts. Sandy studied both art history and studio art at Smith College in Northhampton, Massachusetts. She graduated in 1968. However, in 1967, she attended Sorbonne and Ecole de Louvre in Paris, France. Later in 1969 she went to graduate school at the University of Iowa where she studied filmmaking, multimedia art, and printing. In 1971, she earned her Master of Arts and in 1972, a Master of Fine Arts, both in painting. 

In '72, Sandy began work as a conceptual artist in New York. Later, she gained interest in photography and, in 1978, produced a series of food item stills. Her most known work of art is probably what is known as Radioactive Cats. This photo depicts neon colored cats in gray kitchens and other contrasting colors. She also has another widely popular photo called Fox Games and another called Revenge of the Goldlfish, both very similar to Radioactive Cats. Skoglund was an art professor at the University of Hartford between 1973 and 1976. Currently she teaches photography and art at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Skoglund started creating surrealist images by building incredibly elaborate sets, a process which took months to complete. Her works are characterized by an overwhelming amount of one object and either bright, contrasting colors or a monochromatic color scheme.
